A single streetlamp casts a small circle of warm light, and a few windows glow faintly. Yet above the rooftops stretches a luminous blue sky dotted with white clouds, as bright as midday.

This art print reproduces The Empire of Light II (L'Empire des lumières II), painted by René Magritte in 1950. The original oil on canvas is in the collection of The Museum of Modern Art in New York.

An early version of a famous paradox

This is one of the first paintings in Magritte's celebrated Empire of Light series, which he developed over many versions during the following years. The wide, horizontal composition gives the sky even more room, and the band of night along the bottom feels like a quiet street seen from across a square.

The painting works through subtlety. Every element is ordinary and painted with calm realism. Only the combination of night below and day above is impossible, and the mind keeps trying to reconcile the two. Magritte saw in this subject a union of contrasting moods, and many viewers find it soothing and slightly melancholic at the same time.

Deep greens and blacks below meet a clear, soft blue above, giving the print a balanced and restful palette.

Calm for everyday spaces

The horizontal format makes this print well suited to a bedroom above the bed, or a living room above a sofa. Its quiet mood and cool colors pair easily with navy, white, gray and natural wood.

Print options

This product is a printed reproduction of the artwork, made to order in the format you select.

Sizes: 12x16 in (30x40 cm), 18x24 in (45x60 cm), 20x28 in (50x70 cm) and 24x36 in (60x90 cm)

Canvas: the image printed on canvas

Framed canvas: canvas print in a black, dark wood or wood frame

Matte paper poster: unframed print on matte paper

Select your size and finish and enjoy a little of Magritte's twilight paradox every day.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1016/6000/0569/files/f912b098-7a22-4939-bf09-42edeaa4f2b0.webp?v=1793278898
