Pierre-Auguste Renoir

French Impressionist painter (1841–1919)

Bouquet of Roses, 1879

Oil on panel

Original: Clark Art Institute, Williamstown, Massachusetts, USAimpressionism

About the artwork

Pink and white roses spill outward in quick, generous brushstrokes, mixed with tight buds, trailing stems and leaves that turn from deep green to russet. There is no vase and no table, only the bouquet, floating against a soft grey-green ground as if it had been arranged directly on the wall.

This art print reproduces Bouquet of Roses, painted in 1879 by Pierre-Auguste Renoir in oil on panel. The original belongs to the Clark Art Institute in Williamstown, Massachusetts.

A Summer at Wargemont

In the summer of 1879, the banker and diplomat Paul Bérard invited Renoir to his country house at Wargemont, in Normandy. During the visit, Renoir painted portraits of Bérard's children and several decorative panels for the house. This bouquet was created for a door in the library, which explains its unusual floating composition: it was conceived to decorate an architectural surface rather than as a conventional easel picture.

The Clark highlights the charming tension at the heart of the work. The arrangement itself is orderly and traditional, but the thick brushstrokes and lively color belong unmistakably to Impressionism.

Living With the Work

Soft rose, creamy white and muted sage tones make this an elegant, romantic piece for a bedroom, dining room or entryway. Its light, airy composition also pairs beautifully with neutral walls and natural materials, bringing a lasting bloom to the room.

Styling & Hanging Tips

Pick the right size
Above a sofa, bed or console, choose an artwork about two-thirds of the furniture’s width. Open the Size Guide next to the sizes to see every option to scale.

Hang it at eye level
Place the centre of the artwork about 57″ (145 cm) from the floor. Above furniture, leave 6–10″ (15–25 cm) between the furniture and the bottom of the piece.

Build a gallery wall
Start with one large statement piece and add two or three smaller ones around it, keeping 2–3″ (5–8 cm) between them for a calm, curated look.

Light and care
Avoid direct sunlight and spots above radiators or in steamy bathrooms. Dust gently with a soft, dry cloth.
