Jackson Pollock

American, 1912–1956

Autumn Rhythm (Number 30), 1950

Oil-modified alkyd resin on canvas

Original: The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New Yorkabstract & bold

About the artwork

Black loops sweep across a warm, pale ground, opening into small pockets of breathing space before gathering again. Autumn Rhythm (Number 30) by Jackson Pollock brings that interplay of density and openness to this art print. Its restrained palette gives the image cohesion while an intricate network of marks keeps the eye moving across the horizontal composition.

The artwork and its context

Created in 1950, the work belongs to Pollock’s mature exploration of poured painting within Abstract Expressionism. The original is in The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, whose current collection record identifies its medium as oil-modified alkyd resin on canvas. The print reproduces the appearance of that painted composition, rather than the original material surface.

Pollock’s lines invite an active kind of viewing. Follow one arc and it crosses another, disappears into a knot, then seems to resume elsewhere. No central figure directs the experience. The title may suggest seasonal change, but the image offers rhythm, color, and motion rather than a literal autumn landscape. Its visual openness makes room for different associations on repeated viewing.

Living with the image

Above a sofa or across from a reading chair, this reproduction can bring lively detail to a room furnished in quiet neutrals. Beige, black, and warm wood are natural companions for its palette. Consider the distance from which you will usually see it: the overall movement reads across a room, while the smaller crossings reward a closer look. A simple setting lets these two scales of attention coexist.

Styling & Hanging Tips

Pick the right size
Above a sofa, bed or console, choose an artwork about two-thirds of the furniture’s width. Open the Size Guide next to the sizes to see every option to scale.

Hang it at eye level
Place the centre of the artwork about 57″ (145 cm) from the floor. Above furniture, leave 6–10″ (15–25 cm) between the furniture and the bottom of the piece.

Build a gallery wall
Start with one large statement piece and add two or three smaller ones around it, keeping 2–3″ (5–8 cm) between them for a calm, curated look.

Light and care
Avoid direct sunlight and spots above radiators or in steamy bathrooms. Dust gently with a soft, dry cloth.
