René Magritte

Belgian Surrealist painter, born in Lessines in 1898, died in Brussels in 1967

Golconda

Belgian Surrealism

About the artwork

Men in dark overcoats and bowler hats fill the sky, some close enough to show the folds of their coats, others shrinking into small blue shapes in the distance. Nobody seems to be falling or rising. They simply hang in the air above a hazy landscape of low hills, as calm as a weather pattern.

This art print shows Golconda (Golconde), one of René Magritte's most recognizable Surrealist images. The best-known version, painted in 1953 and now in the Menil Collection in Houston, sets the figures against a row of houses. The image on this print places them over an open landscape instead, with loose, visible brushwork and a pale, washed sky.

An ordinary crowd made strange

Golconda is the name of a historic city in India known for its diamond mines, and the word became a byword for great wealth. Magritte gave his paintings poetic titles that do not explain the image, and the connection here is left open. What the viewer sees is a crowd of nearly identical men, the familiar clerks and commuters of mid-century life, arranged in a regular pattern like raindrops or wallpaper.

The effect can be read as humorous, unsettling or both. The repetition suggests anonymity and conformity, yet small differences in coat color and posture keep each figure individual. The soft blues, grays and browns make it one of the gentler and more decorative images in Magritte's work.

Bringing Golconda home

The light, airy palette suits living rooms, entryways and bright modern spaces. The horizontal composition works well above a sofa or sideboard, and the repeating figures hold attention without overwhelming a room.

Styling & Hanging Tips

Pick the right size
Above a sofa, bed or console, choose an artwork about two-thirds of the furniture’s width. Open the Size Guide next to the sizes to see every option to scale.

Hang it at eye level
Place the centre of the artwork about 57″ (145 cm) from the floor. Above furniture, leave 6–10″ (15–25 cm) between the furniture and the bottom of the piece.

Build a gallery wall
Start with one large statement piece and add two or three smaller ones around it, keeping 2–3″ (5–8 cm) between them for a calm, curated look.

Light and care
Avoid direct sunlight and spots above radiators or in steamy bathrooms. Dust gently with a soft, dry cloth.
