Remedios Varo

Spanish-born Surrealist painter who worked in Mexico (1908–1963)

Allegory of Winter, 1948

Gouache on paper

Original: Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, Madrid, SpainSurrealism

About the artwork

Look closely and the frost begins to tell a story. A small songbird, a golden pheasant-like bird, a spray of pink wildflowers and a pale sprig of leaves each rest inside a translucent, faceted capsule, suspended on fine white threads between thorn-crowned trees. Below, the ground breaks into a honeycomb of dark cells, and snowflake patterns glint in the shadows.

This art print reproduces Allegory of Winter (Alegoría del invierno), painted in 1948 by Remedios Varo, the Spanish-born Surrealist who settled in Mexico in the early 1940s. The original is a gouache on paper in the collection of the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía in Madrid.

A Winter That Preserves

Varo does not paint winter as an empty, dead landscape. Instead, the season becomes a quiet archive in which life is held in suspension, waiting for its moment to return. The Reina Sofía links the work to a constant in her art: the representation of living beings and nature, and the passing of time, which for Varo imposed a kind of order, rhythm and harmony on the cosmos.

The spiked trees feel both protective and forbidding, while the web of threads ties every bird, flower and crystal into one delicate system. It is easy to read the scene as a meditation on dormancy and renewal, though Varo leaves its meaning open.

Living With the Work

Smoky mauve, earthy brown and frosted white give the composition a hushed, silvery atmosphere. It rewards slow looking, which makes it a natural fit for a bedroom, a reading corner or a calm living room wall where new details reveal themselves over time.

Note: the original composition is nearly square; this edition is presented in a vertical format.

Choose Your Format

  • Canvas print – the image printed on canvas, for a soft, painterly surface.
  • Framed canvas – the canvas print finished with a black, dark wood or wood frame.

Every format is available in four sizes: 12×16″ (30×40 cm), 18×24″ (45×60 cm), 20×28″ (50×70 cm) and 24×36″ (60×90 cm).

Please note: this is a printed reproduction of the artwork, not an original painting.

Styling & Hanging Tips

Pick the right size
Above a sofa, bed or console, choose an artwork about two-thirds of the furniture’s width. Open the Size Guide next to the sizes to see every option to scale.

Hang it at eye level
Place the centre of the artwork about 57″ (145 cm) from the floor. Above furniture, leave 6–10″ (15–25 cm) between the furniture and the bottom of the piece.

Build a gallery wall
Start with one large statement piece and add two or three smaller ones around it, keeping 2–3″ (5–8 cm) between them for a calm, curated look.

Light and care
Avoid direct sunlight and spots above radiators or in steamy bathrooms. Dust gently with a soft, dry cloth.
