Cathedral, 1947

Enamel and aluminum paint on canvas

Original: Dallas Museum of Art, Dallasabstract & bold

About the artwork

A web of black marks crosses pale gray and cream passages, with slender warm accents breaking through the cooler field. In this vertical presentation, Cathedral by Jackson Pollock becomes a concentrated study of movement and contrast. The art print encourages a shifting focus between individual drips, angular crossings, and the larger pattern that holds them together.

The artwork and its context

Pollock created Cathedral in 1947, during the emergence of his poured painting approach. The original belongs to the Dallas Museum of Art, which identifies its medium as enamel and aluminum paint on canvas. It sits within the history of Abstract Expressionism, where gesture and the behavior of paint became central parts of the image’s language.

The title may evoke the complexity or soaring rhythms of architecture, yet no literal building needs to be found within the marks. Looking can begin with the spaces between lines as readily as with the lines themselves. Dense patches give way to lighter intervals, producing a visual pulse that can feel both spontaneous and organized. These are ways of experiencing the composition, rather than claims about a single intended meaning.

Living with the image

The product images show an upright format, a useful choice for a wall beside shelving or a compact area in an office or library. Its mostly neutral palette can sit comfortably near charcoal furniture, pale walls, or natural wood. A little surrounding space helps the busy linework remain legible. This printed reproduction conveys the appearance of the painting; it is not an enamel painting or a recreation of the original’s physical surface.

Choose your print

For this upright presentation, choose a matte paper poster, canvas print, or framed canvas in one of four listed size options. Framed canvas variants offer Black frame, Dark wood frame, and Wood frame choices. Select the available combination that works best beside your furniture and shelving.

Details & Materials

Art Print (Museum-Quality Matte Paper Poster)

Framed Canvas

Styling & Hanging Tips

Pick the right size
Above a sofa, bed or console, choose an artwork about two-thirds of the furniture’s width. Open the Size Guide next to the sizes to see every option to scale.

Hang it at eye level
Place the centre of the artwork about 57″ (145 cm) from the floor. Above furniture, leave 6–10″ (15–25 cm) between the furniture and the bottom of the piece.

Build a gallery wall
Start with one large statement piece and add two or three smaller ones around it, keeping 2–3″ (5–8 cm) between them for a calm, curated look.

Light and care
Avoid direct sunlight and spots above radiators or in steamy bathrooms. Dust gently with a soft, dry cloth.
