Jackson Pollock

American, 1912–1956

Circumcision, 1946

Oil on canvas

Original: Peggy Guggenheim Collection, Veniceabstract & bold

About the artwork

Blue-green passages, coral reds, pale shapes, and insistent black lines crowd together in a scene that resists an easy reading. This Circumcision art print by Jackson Pollock reproduces a composition poised between recognizable figures and independent gestures. Eyes, angular limbs, and arrowlike marks seem to emerge, then dissolve back into the surrounding color.

The artwork and its context

Painted in January 1946, the original is an oil painting on canvas in the Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venice. It represents a transitional moment in Pollock’s development toward the abstraction associated with Abstract Expressionism. The museum describes a lingering Cubist framework alongside increasingly fluid and expressive linework, a combination visible in the image’s compartments and restless crossings.

The title and totemic forms can suggest ritual, but the subject should remain open. The museum’s interpretation allows for a rite of passage while emphasizing that the visual evidence does not establish a specific narrative. That uncertainty is part of the painting’s pull. Looking becomes a process of testing connections between fragments, with no requirement to resolve them into a definitive scene.

Living with the image

In a living room or a space devoted to modern art, this reproduction offers a more figurative counterpoint to Pollock’s later poured compositions. Its blue passages can connect with a cool interior palette, while the red and yellow accents introduce warmth. Keep nearby patterns relatively quiet to give the overlapping shapes room to unfold. The product is a printed reproduction, so the original’s oil medium describes its art history rather than the manufacture of your print.

Choose your print

Choose from a matte paper poster, canvas print, or framed canvas in four listed size options. Framed canvas variants offer Black frame, Dark wood frame, and Wood frame choices. Select the format and available frame combination that best supports the composition in your space.

Styling & Hanging Tips

Pick the right size
Above a sofa, bed or console, choose an artwork about two-thirds of the furniture’s width. Open the Size Guide next to the sizes to see every option to scale.

Hang it at eye level
Place the centre of the artwork about 57″ (145 cm) from the floor. Above furniture, leave 6–10″ (15–25 cm) between the furniture and the bottom of the piece.

Build a gallery wall
Start with one large statement piece and add two or three smaller ones around it, keeping 2–3″ (5–8 cm) between them for a calm, curated look.

Light and care
Avoid direct sunlight and spots above radiators or in steamy bathrooms. Dust gently with a soft, dry cloth.
