René Magritte

Belgian Surrealist painter, born in Lessines in 1898, died in Brussels in 1967

Homesickness, 1940

Oil on canvas

Belgian Surrealism

About the artwork

A man dressed in black stands at the parapet of a bridge, his back turned, with large dark wings folded behind him. A few steps away, a lion lies on the pavement, calm and watchful. Above them the sky glows a warm, hazy yellow, as if the scene were suspended between day and dusk.

This art print reproduces Homesickness (Le Mal du pays), a painting by René Magritte dated 1940. It was created during the early years of the Second World War, when Magritte briefly left Belgium for France, and it is one of the most quietly emotional images of his career.

A scene of waiting

Magritte rarely explained his images, and this one invites several readings. The winged man might be an angel, a fallen figure or simply a person lost in thought. The lion, usually a symbol of strength, lies still and almost tame. The title points toward longing for home, and the composition supports that mood: two solitary presences, side by side but not interacting, gazing at nothing in particular.

The painting avoids drama. Its power comes from stillness, the smooth golden light, the rhythmic openings of the stone balustrade and the dark mass of the wings against the bright sky.

Living with Homesickness

The vertical format and warm, muted colors make this print well suited to a bedroom, hallway or quiet reading corner. It pairs naturally with ochre, charcoal and cream tones and with spaces meant for reflection.

Styling & Hanging Tips

Pick the right size
Above a sofa, bed or console, choose an artwork about two-thirds of the furniture’s width. Open the Size Guide next to the sizes to see every option to scale.

Hang it at eye level
Place the centre of the artwork about 57″ (145 cm) from the floor. Above furniture, leave 6–10″ (15–25 cm) between the furniture and the bottom of the piece.

Build a gallery wall
Start with one large statement piece and add two or three smaller ones around it, keeping 2–3″ (5–8 cm) between them for a calm, curated look.

Light and care
Avoid direct sunlight and spots above radiators or in steamy bathrooms. Dust gently with a soft, dry cloth.
