René Magritte

Belgian Surrealist painter, born in Lessines in 1898, died in Brussels in 1967

The Empty Mask, 1928

Oil on canvas

Original: National Museum Cardiff (Amgueddfa Cymru – Museum Wales)Belgian Surrealism

About the artwork

A freestanding wooden frame of irregular shape stands in a dark space, divided into six compartments. Each one holds a different picture: a cloudy sky, a lead curtain hung with sleigh bells, the façade of a brick house, a sheet of paper cutouts, a dense forest and a burst of fire.

This art print reproduces The Empty Mask (Le Masque vide), painted by René Magritte in 1928. The original oil on canvas is in the collection of Amgueddfa Cymru – Museum Wales, at National Museum Cardiff.

Images behind images

In 1929 Magritte published a short illustrated text, "Words and Images," in which he observed that an image can suggest that there are others behind it. The Empty Mask puts that idea on display. The frame looks like a window or a puzzle, yet each panel is itself an image of something we normally see whole: the sky, a building, a forest.

The title adds another layer. A mask hides a face, but this one is empty, made only of fragments of the visible world. Museum Wales relates the work to the Surrealists' interest in the subconscious and to a sense of something invisible lying beyond appearances.

The golden frame, flickering orange flames and cool sky create a striking contrast against the dark background, giving the composition a strong, graphic presence.

A thought-provoking wall piece

The horizontal format suits a study, office or library, and it works well in modern interiors with black, gold or wood tones. It is an ideal choice for anyone who enjoys art that questions how we see.

Styling & Hanging Tips

Pick the right size
Above a sofa, bed or console, choose an artwork about two-thirds of the furniture’s width. Open the Size Guide next to the sizes to see every option to scale.

Hang it at eye level
Place the centre of the artwork about 57″ (145 cm) from the floor. Above furniture, leave 6–10″ (15–25 cm) between the furniture and the bottom of the piece.

Build a gallery wall
Start with one large statement piece and add two or three smaller ones around it, keeping 2–3″ (5–8 cm) between them for a calm, curated look.

Light and care
Avoid direct sunlight and spots above radiators or in steamy bathrooms. Dust gently with a soft, dry cloth.
