René Magritte

Belgian Surrealist painter, born in Lessines in 1898, died in Brussels in 1967

The Lost Jockey, 1926

Belgian Surrealism

About the artwork

Between heavy dark curtains, as if on a stage, a jockey urges his horse into a gallop. Around them rise tall, turned columns shaped like bilboquets, the wooden cup-and-ball toys, with bare black branches sprouting from their tops. Their surfaces are covered in printed sheet music, and the white ground beneath is crossed by fine drawn lines under a deep blue sky.

This art print reproduces a version of The Lost Jockey (Le Jockey perdu) by René Magritte, dated 1926. Magritte made several versions of the subject in different media, and this one combines drawing, paint and collage elements.

A key early Surrealist image

The Lost Jockey is often described as Magritte's first truly Surrealist work, the image in which he found his own visual language. He returned to the motif repeatedly over the following decades, in collages, gouaches and oils, with the same rider racing through a forest of bilboquets.

The scene feels like a dream staged in a theater. The jockey is in full motion, yet he seems to be going nowhere, trapped in a strange, enchanted landscape. The sheet music on the columns is sometimes linked to Magritte's friendship with the musician and poet E. L. T. Mesens, and it adds a sense of rhythm to the composition.

Crisp whites and grays meet deep blue and dark green curtains, with a band of ochre at the bottom, giving the image a graphic, theatrical look.

A dynamic piece for living spaces

The horizontal format and sense of movement suit a living room, hallway or music room. It is an inspired choice for lovers of horses, theater and the history of Surrealism.

Styling & Hanging Tips

Pick the right size
Above a sofa, bed or console, choose an artwork about two-thirds of the furniture’s width. Open the Size Guide next to the sizes to see every option to scale.

Hang it at eye level
Place the centre of the artwork about 57″ (145 cm) from the floor. Above furniture, leave 6–10″ (15–25 cm) between the furniture and the bottom of the piece.

Build a gallery wall
Start with one large statement piece and add two or three smaller ones around it, keeping 2–3″ (5–8 cm) between them for a calm, curated look.

Light and care
Avoid direct sunlight and spots above radiators or in steamy bathrooms. Dust gently with a soft, dry cloth.
