About the artwork

A strange traveler pauses in a field of mossy green. Its slender blue-grey head, topped with a tuft of copper hair and a pale bow, turns to the left with an air of quiet dignity. Its body disappears inside a long striped cloak that resembles polished wood grain, and where legs should be, a pale, feathery tail curls into a spoked wheel, carrying a tiny bird-like head along its curve.

This art print reproduces Fantastic Animal (Animal fantástico), a 1959 work by Remedios Varo, the Spanish-born Surrealist painter who spent the last two decades of her life in Mexico.

Varo's World on Wheels

The wheel is one of the most recurring images in Varo's art. In the same year she imagined this creature, she also made Homo rodans, her only sculpture: an invented ancestor of humankind assembled from animal bones, rolling on a single wheel instead of legs and accompanied by a mock-scientific text. Scholars have pointed out that the wheel and the idea of the journey are among the most frequent metaphors in her work, often linked to movement toward a higher state of awareness.

Fantastic Animal belongs to that same playful, inventive bestiary. Part bird, part serpent, part cloaked wanderer, the figure invites interpretation without demanding one: some viewers see a pilgrim on a spiritual journey, others simply a delightful piece of Surrealist whimsy.

Styling & Hanging Tips

Pick the right size
Above a sofa, bed or console, choose an artwork about two-thirds of the furniture’s width. Open the Size Guide next to the sizes to see every option to scale.

Hang it at eye level
Place the centre of the artwork about 57″ (145 cm) from the floor. Above furniture, leave 6–10″ (15–25 cm) between the furniture and the bottom of the piece.

Build a gallery wall
Start with one large statement piece and add two or three smaller ones around it, keeping 2–3″ (5–8 cm) between them for a calm, curated look.

Light and care
Avoid direct sunlight and spots above radiators or in steamy bathrooms. Dust gently with a soft, dry cloth.
