Qi Baishi

Birds of Paradise

About the artwork

A brilliant scarlet bird perches on a bending branch, its long tail feathers sweeping down across the paper in graceful red ribbons. The branch is painted in quick, confident strokes of black ink, with dark leaves and tiny orange berries scattered along it. At the right, a column of calligraphy and a red seal complete the composition. With just a few colors and a great deal of empty space, the painting feels light, joyful and alive.

This art print reproduces a work by Qi Baishi (1864–1957), one of the most celebrated Chinese painters of the twentieth century.

From Carpenter to Master

Qi Baishi was born into a poor farming family in Hunan province and first worked as a carpenter and woodcarver before turning to painting, poetry, calligraphy and seal carving. He became famous for his lively, freehand style, known as xieyi, and for his love of humble subjects: shrimp, crabs, insects, flowers and birds, all painted with remarkable economy and humor.

Works like this one show why he is so admired. Every stroke counts, nothing is overworked, and the white of the paper becomes as important as the ink.

Living With the Work

Bold red, black ink and soft cream make this a bright, calming piece for a living room, bedroom or entryway. Its horizontal format sits beautifully above a sofa, bed or console, and it is a lovely gift for lovers of Asian art and minimalist interiors.

Choose Your Format

  • Canvas print – the image printed on canvas, for a soft, painterly surface.
  • Framed canvas – the canvas print finished with a black, dark wood or wood frame.
  • Matte paper poster – a glare-free, museum-quality paper print, ready for a frame of your choice.

Every format is available in four sizes: 12×16″ (30×40 cm), 18×24″ (45×60 cm), 20×28″ (50×70 cm) and 24×36″ (60×90 cm).

Please note: this is a printed reproduction of the artwork, not an original painting.

Styling & Hanging Tips

Pick the right size
Above a sofa, bed or console, choose an artwork about two-thirds of the furniture’s width. Open the Size Guide next to the sizes to see every option to scale.

Hang it at eye level
Place the centre of the artwork about 57″ (145 cm) from the floor. Above furniture, leave 6–10″ (15–25 cm) between the furniture and the bottom of the piece.

Build a gallery wall
Start with one large statement piece and add two or three smaller ones around it, keeping 2–3″ (5–8 cm) between them for a calm, curated look.

Light and care
Avoid direct sunlight and spots above radiators or in steamy bathrooms. Dust gently with a soft, dry cloth.
