About the artwork

It is late, the street is empty, and the only light comes from a corner diner. Through its long curved window we see three customers at the counter and a server in white, all bathed in a hard yellow-green glow. No entrance is visible, nothing seems to happen, and yet the scene feels charged with a story we will never hear.

This art print reproduces Nighthawks, painted in 1942 by Edward Hopper in oil on canvas. The original is in the Art Institute of Chicago, which bought it the same year it was completed.

A Night Street in New York

Hopper said the painting was suggested by a restaurant on Greenwich Avenue in New York, where two streets meet. The exact diner has never been identified with certainty, and Hopper noted that he simplified the scene and made the restaurant bigger, turning a real corner into something closer to a universal image.

Viewers often read Nighthawks as a picture of urban solitude: the figures sit close together yet seem isolated, sealed behind glass from the dark city outside. Because it was painted shortly after the United States entered the Second World War, some historians have also connected its tension to that uncertain moment. These are interpretations, and part of the painting's power is that it never explains itself.

Styling & Hanging Tips

Pick the right size
Above a sofa, bed or console, choose an artwork about two-thirds of the furniture’s width. Open the Size Guide next to the sizes to see every option to scale.

Hang it at eye level
Place the centre of the artwork about 57″ (145 cm) from the floor. Above furniture, leave 6–10″ (15–25 cm) between the furniture and the bottom of the piece.

Build a gallery wall
Start with one large statement piece and add two or three smaller ones around it, keeping 2–3″ (5–8 cm) between them for a calm, curated look.

Light and care
Avoid direct sunlight and spots above radiators or in steamy bathrooms. Dust gently with a soft, dry cloth.
