Claude Monet

French Impressionist painter (1840–1926)

The Gare Saint-Lazare: Arrival of a Train, 1877

Oil on canvas

Original: Harvard Art Museums/Fogg Museum, Cambridge, Massachusetts, USAimpressionism

About the artwork

Clouds of white and blue steam billow beneath the iron-and-glass roof of a Paris station. On the right, a black locomotive with a red front pulls in; on the left, another train waits; and between them, small figures move along the tracks and platforms, half dissolved in vapor and light.

This art print reproduces The Gare Saint-Lazare: Arrival of a Train, painted in 1877 by Claude Monet in oil on canvas. The original is in the collection of the Harvard Art Museums (Fogg Museum) in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Modern Life, Painted in Steam

In 1877 Monet painted around a dozen canvases of the Gare Saint-Lazare, one of the busiest railway stations in Paris. Trains were not considered a picturesque subject at the time, which made his choice strikingly modern. Several of these station views were shown at the third Impressionist exhibition that same year.

What fascinated Monet was not only the machinery but what it produced: smoke, steam and constantly shifting light. He reportedly described the station at departure time as so thick with smoke that almost nothing was clearly visible, and called the effect an enchantment. In this canvas, the solid architecture of the shed seems to melt into the sky of steam, while the dark locomotive anchors the composition.

Living With the Work

Cool blues, smoky whites and a few sparks of red bring energy and atmosphere to any room. It is a superb choice for a living room, an entrance hall or a workspace, especially for anyone who loves Paris, travel or the romance of the railway age.

Styling & Hanging Tips

Pick the right size
Above a sofa, bed or console, choose an artwork about two-thirds of the furniture’s width. Open the Size Guide next to the sizes to see every option to scale.

Hang it at eye level
Place the centre of the artwork about 57″ (145 cm) from the floor. Above furniture, leave 6–10″ (15–25 cm) between the furniture and the bottom of the piece.

Build a gallery wall
Start with one large statement piece and add two or three smaller ones around it, keeping 2–3″ (5–8 cm) between them for a calm, curated look.

Light and care
Avoid direct sunlight and spots above radiators or in steamy bathrooms. Dust gently with a soft, dry cloth.
