About the artwork

A green apple has grown to fill an entire room. It presses against the ceiling and the walls, its stem nearly touching the top, its skin glowing with yellow and red highlights. A small window on the left opens onto the sea, the only reminder of the world outside.

This art print reproduces The Listening Room (La Chambre d'écoute), painted by René Magritte in 1952. The original oil on canvas is in the Menil Collection in Houston.

A familiar object at an impossible scale

The apple was one of Magritte's favorite subjects, appearing in some of his most famous images. Here, he plays with scale in the simplest possible way: a single piece of fruit becomes too big for its container. The room feels both cozy and claustrophobic, and the viewer cannot tell whether the apple has grown or the room has shrunk.

The title adds a playful twist. A listening room suggests a quiet space for music or conversation, yet here there is no space left at all. The apple seems to absorb every sound, filling the room with its silent presence.

Rich apple greens dominate, set against warm terracotta walls and a soft blue glimpse of sea, giving the painting a bright, fresh and appetizing palette.

Styling & Hanging Tips

Pick the right size
Above a sofa, bed or console, choose an artwork about two-thirds of the furniture’s width. Open the Size Guide next to the sizes to see every option to scale.

Hang it at eye level
Place the centre of the artwork about 57″ (145 cm) from the floor. Above furniture, leave 6–10″ (15–25 cm) between the furniture and the bottom of the piece.

Build a gallery wall
Start with one large statement piece and add two or three smaller ones around it, keeping 2–3″ (5–8 cm) between them for a calm, curated look.

Light and care
Avoid direct sunlight and spots above radiators or in steamy bathrooms. Dust gently with a soft, dry cloth.
